Catholic League President Calls Out The Three Stooges for Total Nunsense

Movie critics are unhappy with the current Three Stooges film because it’s terrible.

But The Catholic League is displeased with the new comedy for an entirely different reason, and it’s summed up in the following photo:

The Three Stooges Scene

President Bill Donohue has issued a statement in which he’s critical of the idea that this comedy is a faithful homage to the goofy trio.

“Yes, the slapstick is there, along with the groans, pokes, thumps and the like. But the TV show never mocked nuns or showed infants urinating in the face of the Stooges. The film does,” Donohue said.

As seen above, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kate Upton portrays a nun in the movie, donning a rosary necklace along with a bikini.

Larry David also takes on the role of nun… named Sister Mary-Mengele, likely after the Nazi war criminal Joseph Mengele.

“This movie is not just another remake: it is a cultural marker of sociological significance, and what it says about the way we’ve changed is not encouraging,” says Donohue.

A Fox rep has responded to the criticism by saying “the Stooges have proved over time, laughter is a universal medicine. The nuns that Mr. Donohue alludes to, are in fact, caring, heroic characters in the movie, albeit within the framework of a very broad comedy.”

Where do you stand on this issue? Should the Catholic League be angry?

Scarlett Johansson Speaks on “Devastating” Divorce, Nate Naylor and More

Scarlett Johansson will soon star in The Avengers as Black Widow. Which is appropriate because, in many ways, the actress is still in mourning over her divorce from Ryan Reynolds.

“It’s horrible. It was devastating. It really throws you,” Johansson says in the latest issue of Vogue. You think that your life is going to be one way, and then, for various reasons or whatever, it doesn’t work out.”

Johansson and Reynolds finalized the paperwork last summer in “comically amicable” fashion,” the gorgeous star adds.

Scarlett Johansson Vogue Cover

Does she regret the marriage? Not at all. It’s “nice to know that you’re capable of loving somebody in that way,” Scarlett says. But it still hurts.

“This was something I never thought I would be doing. And there’s no way to navigate it. Nobody can give you the right answer. It’s never anything you want to hear. It’s a very lonely thing. It’s like the loneliest thing you’ll ever do, in some way.”

Since the split, Johansson has been linked to Sean Penn (“We were seeing each other,” she admits. “He’s a remarkable person.”) and is now dating advertising executive Nate Naylor.

She’s also been the victim of a phone hacker who unleashed every guy’s dream upon the Internet: Scarlett Johansson nude pics.

It’s “terrible,” the actress says of imagining strangers looking at her naked body, adding: “You know what I mean? You can’t not think that. Even if they haven’t, you’re paranoid.”

Still, Johansson concludes of both the divorce and this picture scandal: “I don’t want pity.”

Pedals, gears, and poles: India’s makeshift wheelchairs

Thousands of disabled commuters navigate busy streets of New Delhi in wheelchairs that look like bikes, powering themselves with their hands and steering with a metal pole.

? A local, slice-of-life story from a Monitor correspondent.

?At first glance, Su Kumar could be taken for a bicyclist. Pedaling through the snarl of cars, trucks, buses, and donkey carts, he rolls right along with New Delhi?s chaotic traffic. But instead of using his feet, Mr. Kumar, who uses a wheelchair, pedals with his hands. He?s one of thousands of disabled commuters in the capital who navigate the city on wheels.

In a country that has few amenities for those with disabilities, innovation is critical. Kumar?s wheelchair looks like a three-wheeled bike with a bucket seat. He travels about 10 miles to work each day, powering himself with his hands and steering with a metal pole.

Kumar has been unable to walk since he was a child. But he considers himself fortunate. Fifteen years ago, a local charity gave him his wheelchair, which cost more than $100. He says it has made all the difference.

?I can do everything with this wheelchair,? says Kumar with a smile.

Wheelchair users not only navigate Delhi?s tricky streets, they have turned their wheelchairs into makeshift stores, barbershops, and vegetable stalls.
On a sweltering afternoon, a group of jabbering children surrounds a man juggling dripping ice-cream cones amid the honking cars. He moves with ease. It takes an experienced eye to notice that he?s in a wheelchair that is attached to his ice cream cart.

From the Forums: Deploying in a month, what will be waiting for me when I get back?

Patriotic Lloyd

Casen writes in our Rumored Devices Forum,

I'm deploying in a month. What will be out when I return? When I get back around beginning 2013, what is your speculation of the phone I will be to get.

I'm feeling I will be able to get a phone with a 4.8 inch 720p screen, quad core, 1.5GB ram. It will have 64GB internal memory (because as nice as the cloud is, it does NOT work in all the places the military works.) It will have a SDcard slot, 3000 mAh minimum battery, and will feature actual stereo speakers (on the back in landscape mode) I honestly do not care about the thinness, but hopefully around the same thickness as a Droid Charge.

A small Bezel on top and bottom, (for holding) and a minimal Bezel on the sides. The camera won't have more than 10MP, but will be better engineered to not suck ass. The front-facing camera will be 5MP. Soft keys only on the screen, and there WILL be an actual camera button with 2 stages. Bootloader will be un encrypted (because that's the problem). Also, will be a Verizon device.

What are your hopes for an actual early 2013 device?

Hey, Casen! First off, thanks for doing what you do. As for the phone, a lot of what you're expecting is likely in the natural progression of smartphones. I'd certainly love to see 64GB of on-board storage (and for it to be economical to have), as well as the larger battery. But I'm also pretty well convinced that the major shift in 2012 going into 2013 is going to be interoperability among devices. Wifi Direct's likely to play a pretty big role in Android's plans for taking over living rooms as well as running what's in your pocket. And we're talking about beyond Google TV. And don't forget that we've still got Intel-based Android devices to look forward to later this year.

Hardware is hardware. It'll always get better. It's where we imagine the software's at in 2013 that really has us excited.

Stay safe out there.

What do you expect to see in 2013? Leave a reply in Casen's thread here.

Ashley Judd Defends Appearance, Rails Against Society’s “Hatred of Women”

Combating critics of her appearance once again, Ashley Judd went off on the sexualization, objectification and hatred of women she perceives in society.

Stories about Judd’s puffy face, caused by the medication she had been taking for a sinus infection, gave way to plastic surgery rumors in recent weeks.

Rumors that did not sit well with the Missing star, who is assailing critics left and right over this “sad commentary” on our obsession with appearance.

“I think it’s hatred of women that invites the criticism,” the actress told NBC.

“I think it’s the objectification of girls and this hypersexualization of our society. It doesn’t have anything to do with me, really, and how I look.”

Judd says the reaction to her appearance was as swift as it was negative.

“There was no presumption of goodwill,” she says, and that’s what pushed her over the edge. “The conversation went straight to, ‘Oh my gosh.’”

Particularly galling, besides the “nasty, vitriolic and gloating tone,” she added, was the speculation that the 43-year-old had plastic surgery.

“I started to catch the double bind where, you know, my face looks puffy, ‘She’s had work done,’ you know?” Judd says, noting the irony.

Ashley Judd Puffy Face Photo

“Then, look at the same image in a different interpretation by a separate set of people is, ‘Oh, come on, she doesn’t even have any wrinkles at all, she’s clearly had work.’”

“So, I look bad, I’ve had work. I look too good, I’ve had work.”

Judd said she decided to address this incident “because the conversation was pointedly nasty, gendered, and misogynistic and embodies what all girls and women in modern culture, to a greater or lesser degree, endure every day.”

This happens “in ways both outrageous and subtle,” she says. Do you agree?

New Mali leader threatens rebels with ‘total war’

Mali‘s new interim leader threatened to wage total war on Tuareg rebels and Islamists controlling the north of the country as he took the oath of office Thursday, ending a brief period of military rule.

Dioncounda Traore, the former parliament speaker, was sworn into office in the capital of the west African nation at ceremony attended by, among others, junta leader Captain Amadou Sanogo who grabbed power in a March 22 coup.

Traore, 70, took charge in a country facing its worst-ever crisis, threatening to unleash “total war” on the Tuareg rebels, Islamists and outlaws who overran Mali’s vast desert north in the power vacuum created by the coup.

“I am aware of being the president of a country at war,” said the mathematician turned politician, who is expected to name a prime minister and organise elections within 40 days.

The rebels must “stop the… pillaging, the rapes, they must leave the cities that they have occupied,” he added.

If they don’t “we will not hesitate to wage a total and relentless war”.

The junta had launched the coup that toppled former president Amadou Toumani Toure on the grounds that the government was not effective in resisting a rebellion by Tuareg rebels that was rekindled in January.

But the rebels took advantage of the disarray in Bamako by capturing an area roughly the size of France, including the legendary town of Timbuktu, sparking warnings of humanitarian disaster in an area already gripped by acute food shortages and drought.

The West Africa regional bloc ECOWAS immediately condemned the coup, hit the junta with heavy sanctions and demanded it quit power, paving the way for Thursday’s restoration of civilian rule.

But the junta is expected to retain some influence, with observers saying coup loyalists could be named to key ministerial posts, notably those linked to security, as the army tries to reverse the massive rebel gains.

ECOWAS foreign and defence are scheduled to meet in Ivory Coast on Thursday to mull the prospects of a military intervention in northern Mali, as fears rise that the rebel-held region could become a haven for radical Islamists.

The 15-nation Economic Community of West African States has raised the prospect of sending a force of up to 3,000 men to try to reclaim the region, but the mission’s logistical details and mandate are far from resolved.

“We prefer peace, but if war is the only solution, we will make it with our army,” said Traore, who speaks French, Russian and English and Spanish as well as the Malian dialects Bambara and Soninke.

The Tuareg — many of them heavily-armed and battle-hardened from last year’s Libya war where they fought as mercenaries for fallen dictator Moamer Kadhafi — took advantage of Mali’s political chaos to step up their long-simmering separatist campaign.

Joined by Islamist extremists linked to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), they made unprecedented gains in the weeks since the coup, but that loose rebel faction has reportedly splintered.

The main Tuareg rebel group, Azawad National Liberation Movement (MNLA), has declared an independent Tuareg state, but their call has been rejected by the international community and by the MNLA’s former Islamist allies.

Ansar Dine, the main Islamist group that controls several key towns, has imposed sharia in its some areas under its influence and distanced itself from the Tuareg nationalist cause.

The UN Security Council on Monday warned of the growing “terrorist threat” in Mali and condemned the kidnapping of seven Algerian diplomats in one northern city by an Al-Qaeda splinter group.

The European Commission warned that the north could face a “major humanitarian disaster” unless access is given for food and medicine and said the crisis could also “spill over to neighbouring countries”.

Aid groups have also warned of a humanitarian crisis and abuses against civilians in the lawless area, where more than 200,000 people have been displaced by the fighting this year.

A video obtained by AFP before, during and after the seizure of the northern hub of Gao shows a city riven by chaos since the March 31 rebel takeover.

The footage shows empty prison cells, fleeing residents and looted Red Cross warehouses.

NFC version of Nokia Lumia 610 accidentally leaked on YouTube

In a world where NFC is just starting to become useful, its notable absence on Nokia’s Windows Phones has been increasingly, well, notable. But a video that temporarily appeared on the Finnish phone-maker’s YouTube account reveals that NFC is indeed coming, with a new version of the Lumia 610 on the Orange network apparently set to become the first handset to make it happen somewhere in Europe. The video was quickly pulled, but not before Thegadgetbuff managed to grab a dodgy rip of it, which you’ll see after the break. It contains an interview with Andrea Bacioccola, whose job title (“Lead program manager, NFC”) pretty much says it all — even before he gets to mentioning stuff like FourSquare checking-in, audio speaker pairing like with the N9, and a new Nokia Tag Writer app that could possibly do something similar to the customizable Xperia SmartTag system. See for yourself after the break, and as mentioned, please forgive the clip’s piratical quality.
